Lawn Mowing and Mower Care

Last month Mr. Friendly talked about feeding your lawn, weeds, and insect control. This month Mr. Friendly wants continue that theme and talk about lawn mowing and mower care.

After a long winter you may be itching to get out in your yard. But before you do you'll want to make sure your mower is ready. One of the easiest things you can do for your mower is some routine maintenance to help insure it is running at peak performance. Let's start with some of the basics. First lets start with your mower's engine oil. Now if your mower requires a oil and gas mix then this won't apply to you, but if your oil is separate from your fuel then you'll want to change that old oil and put in some new oil. Most mowers can be easily tipped up on their side to allow you to drain the old oil into an oil pan. Once you've drained the old oil you simply need to refill the mower to the proper level noted on the dipstick with an SAE 30 power mower oil.

Now is also a great time to check and change your air filter and spark plug. We carry a great selection of filters and spark plugs on hand and have the ability to order what you need should we not have the one your mower uses. Changing the filter and spark plug usually requires a screwdriver and spark plug wrench.

The last thing you will want to look at is your mower blade. A good sharp blade makes for clean, healthier cuts on your grass and makes for less work for your mower. If your blade has gouges, nicks, or dull cutting edge you'll want to remove the blade and either have it resharpened or replaced. A blade can only be sharpened so many times and needs to be replaced if they are too narrow or is cracked from hitting solid objects like rocks or landscaping. We offer a mower blade sharpening service as well as new blades to fit most models. To remove the blade you will want to first unplug the spark plug wire to insure the mower cannot accidentally start. Next tip the mower onto it's side. Wedge the blade with a piece of wood to keep it from turning or use blade removal tool.

Mower Blade Sharpening

While you're here be sure to drop off your mower blade for sharpening. A sharp blade makes for cleaner, healthier cuts on your grass and makes cutting easier for your lawn mower. And to make sure your blade stays sharp longer be sure to pick up or rake any loose foreign debris in your lawn like sticks or stones.

When mowing it's good idea to alternate the direction you mow each time you mow. For example if you mow in a direction of east to west direction, then the next time mow north to south or diagonally. This helps produce healthier growing grass as well as prevents ruts being made in your lawn by your mower wheels.
